Come and join the Safer Streets Fun Day

As part of the Safer Streets project in Stockland Green, The Pioneer Group is organising a Fun Day at Highcroft Community Centre, Slade Road, on Saturday 16th April from 11am to 3pm.

The Safer Streets scheme was launched in September 2021 and is implementing a range of measures including street lighting upgrades, CCTV cameras and a crime prevention equipment for all homes.

On the fun day, there will be four key areas with police and fire teams, a kids zone, 10 community groups and food and drink stalls.

In the “Blue Light Zone”, there will be an opportunity to meet the local policing and fire teams, while receiving free security equipment and advice; items available include personal alarms and property marking kits. Additionally, for those in the Safer Streets core triangle between Marsh Hill, Slade Road, and George Road, extra security hardware will be available, including bike locks, timers for lights and fake TV simulators. To receive the security items, proof of address is required there is a limit to one of each item per household.

The ”Kids Zone” offers free activities to entertain youngsters, including bouncy castles, face painting, and an under-fives play area. It will be manned by local volunteers and staff from The Pioneer Group. There will also be an opportunity to take photographs with local police and firemen, try on uniforms and sit in a police response and fire truck.

Around 10 local community groups will be manning stalls, including Erdington Litter Busters who will be promoting the Adopt a Street Campaign, where residents pledge to keep a street litter free. Local brownie and scout troops will attend, and the latter will be providing some child-friendly archery. Sports lovers can also enjoy activities such as a martial arts demonstration.

There will also be plenty of food and drink options, including a burger van, Jamaican street food, ice cream truck and a coffee shack.

To help the Fun Day run smoothly, the organisers are looking for volunteers to undertake simple tasks, such as monitoring the bouncy castles. There will be free artisanal coffee for all volunteers; and first aiders are particularly welcome.
